Frequently asked

I forgot my master password.

It cannot be recovered. There is no account and no server, so there is nowhere to send a reset link, and neither we nor Google can open your vault. That is also what keeps Gumlock safe.

The only way forward is Forgot Master Password? on the lock screen, which erases that vault so you can start again. If you later remember an old master password, you can restore an encrypted backup made with it.

Do I need an account?

No. You only choose a master password the first time. There is no sign-in screen.

Where are my passwords stored?

On your device, encrypted. If you turn on Google Drive sync (Gumlock Pro), the same encrypted data is also kept in a hidden app folder in your own Google Drive — neither Google nor we can read it. That sync is the only time the app connects to the internet.

Autofill doesn't show up.

In Android settings, choose Gumlock as your autofill service. Settings > Open AutoFill Settings in the app takes you straight there.

In Chrome, also turn on Chrome's Settings > Autofill services > Autofill using another service. Then tap the username field on a sign-in page and Gumlock appears. For a site you haven't saved yet, you can choose Save New Account right there.

How do I unlock with my fingerprint?

You can turn it on when you create a vault, or later under Settings > Security > Unlock with Biometrics. Only methods Android rates as “strong” biometrics are used, so face unlock may not be available on every device.

If you enroll a new fingerprint, biometric unlock turns off for security. Open the vault once with your master password and it turns back on.

How do I back up?

Use Settings > Backup > Export Encrypted Backup and keep the file somewhere other than this device, such as an SD card, a computer or a cloud app's folder. A backup is encrypted with the master password in use at the time.

With Gumlock Pro, Automatic Backup saves backups to a folder you choose on a schedule.

What if I get a new phone?

If you used Google Drive sync (Pro) — install the app on the new device, tap Restore from Google Drive on the first screen, and open the vault with your master password.

If not — tap Restore from Backup on the first screen and choose your encrypted backup file. If you copy data from your old phone while setting up the new one (device-to-device transfer), your vaults come along too.

Vaults are not uploaded to Android's cloud backup, so uninstalling and reinstalling the app does not bring them back. Keep a backup file or use sync.

Can I move between Android and iPhone?

Yes. Gumlock for iOS uses the same backup file format. Create a file with Export Encrypted Backup on one side and open it with Restore from Backup on the other. With Google Drive sync (Pro) turned on, Gumlock for iPhone (1.0.1 or later) can keep the same vaults in sync using the same Google account. iCloud sync works only between Apple devices.

It says the password was changed on another device.

The vault's master password was changed on another device you sync with. Tap the notice and enter the new master password; this device catches up and keeps the changes you made here.

Can I move to another password manager?

Any time. Settings > Export Unencrypted (CSV) creates a file that Google Password Manager and others can import. That file is not encrypted — delete it as soon as you've moved.

What is free?

Security features are always free: unlimited items, autofill, biometric unlock, encryption, encrypted backup and restore, CSV export, account owners and favorites.

Gumlock Pro (one-time purchase, not a subscription) adds Google Drive sync, automatic backup, attachments, multiple vaults, custom fields and widgets. If you stop using Pro, your data still opens.

How do I restore my purchase?

Tap Settings > Gumlock Pro > Restore Purchase. It comes back on any device signed in to the same Google account. Promo codes go in Redeem Promo Code on the same screen.

How do I change the app language?

In the app, go to Settings > Language. English, Korean, German, Spanish and Japanese are available.
