Frequently asked
Do I need an account?
No. There is no sign-in screen. Open the app and start using it.
Where is my data stored?
On your device. If you are signed in to iCloud, your records sync automatically across devices using the same Apple Account, and they come back after you delete and reinstall the app.
There is no developer-operated server.
Does it work without internet?
Yes. Recording and viewing expenses needs no connection. Only exchange rates are fetched — once a day when you are online. Offline, the app uses the last rates it received.
That is the point: it keeps working abroad with roaming switched off.
What about exchange rates for past trips?
The rate at the moment you record an expense is stored with it. Later rate changes never alter amounts from past trips.
You can also edit the rate yourself — the figure on your card statement is often more accurate.
How do backups work?
Under More > Backup, choose the destinations (this device · iCloud Drive · Google Drive) and how often to back up.
Backups saved on the device are available in the Files app > On My iPhone > Journey Ledger > Backups. Backup files are human-readable, so you can open them yourself if you want.
Does it back up at a fixed time?
No. iOS does not guarantee that an app can wake itself at a chosen time. So instead of a fixed clock time, the app checks whether the interval has elapsed when you open and close it, and backs up then.
The settings screen therefore offers intervals (manual · every launch · daily · weekly) rather than a time of day.
What if I get a new phone?
Sign in with the same Apple Account and install the app — iCloud sync brings everything back.
If you were not using sync, go to More > Backup > Restore from backup and pick a file.
Can I use an iPhone and an iPad together?
Yes, and there is nothing to set up — no device registration, no sync switch. The same Apple Account is all it takes.
Automatic backup does run on each device separately, though. With both set to “daily” you get two backup files a day, so it is usually better to leave one of them on “manual”.
What do I get for free?
Nothing you have already recorded is ever locked. Viewing and editing trips, adding expenses, statistics, iCloud sync and manual backup are all free.
The Pro unlock (a one-time purchase, not a subscription) opens two things:
- Creating a third trip and beyond
- Automatic backup intervals and Google Drive backup
How do I restore my purchase?
More > Restore purchases, or the Restore purchases button at the bottom of the Pro screen.
Your purchase belongs to your Apple Account, so signing in with the same account on a new device restores it.
How do I change the app's language?
It follows the device. To change it for this app only, go to Settings > Apps > Journey Ledger > Language.
English, Korean, Japanese, Chinese (Simplified), Spanish and German are available.
