Frequently asked

Do I need an account?

No. There is no sign-in screen. Open the app and start using it.

Where are my records stored?

On your device. With Android Auto Backup on, a copy also goes to your own Google account, so reinstalling the app brings everything back.

There is no developer-operated server.

Can I use it on two devices?

There is no live sync between devices. Android offers nothing that would do it, so if you write on two devices, one side's entries will not survive.

To move to another device, create a backup under More > Backup and restore it on the new one. Auto Backup is for reinstalling on the same device.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Recording and reviewing expenses needs no connection. Only exchange rates are fetched once a day when you are online; otherwise the last rates are used.

It is built this way so you can keep roaming switched off abroad.

What happens to rates for past trips?

The app stores the rate as it was when you recorded the expense. Later rate changes never move the amounts of a finished trip.

You can also edit a rate by hand — the figure on your card statement is often the more accurate one.

How do backups work?

Choose the destination and interval under More > Backup. There are three destinations and you can use several at once.

With only the device folder on, your backups disappear together with the app. Keeping a folder or Drive on as well is safer.

Does it back up at a fixed time?

No. Android does not guarantee that an app can wake itself at a chosen moment. So instead of a fixed time, the app checks when you open it whether the interval has passed. It also runs in the background when the system allows, but the system decides when.

That is why the settings offer an interval (manual · every launch · daily · weekly) rather than a time of day.

What if I get a new phone?

Make a file with More > Backup > Back up now, then load it on the new phone with More > Backup > Restore from backup. If you kept it in a folder or on Google Drive, just open the same place on the new device.

If you are reinstalling on the same device with the same Google account, Android Auto Backup restores it for you.

Can I use a backup made on iPhone?

Yes. The backup format is the same on both platforms. Put the TravelMoney-….json file from the iPhone into the folder you picked on Android and it appears in the restore list. The same works in the other direction.

What is free?

Nothing you have already written is ever locked. Opening and editing trips, recording expenses, statistics, Auto Backup and manual backups are all free.

Unlocking Pro (a one-time purchase, not a subscription) opens two things.

How do I restore my purchase?

There is nothing to do. Your Google Play account carries the purchase. On a new device, as long as you are signed in to Play with the same account, it unlocks as soon as you open the app.

If it does not, open the Play Store app once and try again.

How do I change the app's language?

It follows the device. On Android 13 and later you can set this app alone under Settings > Apps > Journey Ledger > Language.

Korean, English, Japanese, Chinese (Simplified), Spanish and German are supported.
